You thought your choosing was over when you decided upon the college you now attend. Guess again. Now you have to choose between roughly thirty majors and sixty minors, and the doors are all wide open before you. But you've come to a fork and you must make a decision, except it's not a traditional one-way-or-the-other fork you might come to on a hiking path. It's not even a four-pronged fork to wrap your spaghetti around. Your options are virtually unlimited!

Then why do you feel so constrained? Unfortunately, there exists a bittersweet irony in that a flood of possibilities can leave you tentative to choose just one and run with it. That's where we come in.

Like you, the five of us (all freshman) stand at this diverging road, and we plan to do something about it. We want to venture down the roads of the natural sciences, the social sciences, and the humanities. As we explore the different paths we may take, we would like to invite you along. Peeking down these pathways, we will share what we learn, hoping to spark your interests as well as ours in one of these academic realms.

We aren't exactly sure where this road will lead us, but perhaps if you follow us you might stumble upon something that surprises you.

Bests,

Us

Since this is our first entry, we thought we might introduce ourselves individually:

My name is Anna Wong. Being a college freshman at UNC is a daunting, yet exciting adventure. Applying to colleges, I knew I was going to be a biology major. I wanted to work in a research lab. I had it all planned out. Coming to college, I just knew I was going to be a business major. I was going to major in international business and minor in Chinese. Now, I am in college, and I have no idea as to what my major will be. The problem is that I liked the ideas of these majors, but I knew nothing about them. I wanted to minor in Chinese but had never taken the language. I didn’t even know how to say hello. I have always been a journaler. I enjoy documenting my days in ink. Thus, it is perfect for me to be to be able to document my findings as I attempt to gain knowledge in different academic fields. Hopefully, as I gain knowledge, I impart some to you as well, for we are both on the same journey in life.

My name is William Heathcote. I hail from the City of Oaks, and I am an alumnus of Broughton High School. I played two varsity sports and I captained the Lacrosse team my senior year. When my class voted on superlatives, they chose me as “Most likely to be seen in Forbes,” which is my friend, the school newspaper editor’s take on “Most likely to be successful.” If only they could see me now, here in my freshmen year at the University of North Carolina. I’m treading water in the maelstrom of major choices, clinging to the only support I have, a fledgling interest in journalism. People tell me I’m a pretty good orator, so try to keep that in mind when your mind is tuning a voice for my posts. I also like sports, so I’ve decided I might try to go into sports broadcasting, but I’m clueless about what such a pursuit entails. I’m hoping Journalism 101 is going to answer my questions, though in the meantime I’m enjoying the scenery as it passes by, looking for adventure and whatever will bewilder me.

Hey everyone! My name is Jessica, and I am a first year student at UNC Chapel Hill. I’m currently in my second semester of a grueling and exciting freshman year. I came to college with the idea that I wanted to major in Journalism-Public Relations, but like thousands of other fresh college students, I’ve changed my mind. My interests lie in the Fine Arts and Humanities, but I’m still deciding which major specifically to choose (I’m leaning toward English). Along with my four fine peers, I hope to be exploring three disciplines: natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities. While exploring these areas, it is our goal to find out some interesting stuff and

relay it to all you readers. Hopefully this will give you (and me!) a better insight into which path is the right one.

Hallo!

(I’m taking introductory German so please indulge me.)

Call me William. We happen to have two Wills in our group, so keep that in mind. I like rain, simple songs with pretty words, and a good book. I’m officially undecided about my major, although I have a passion for English. My one concern, however, is turning an English degree into a lucrative living, so

we’ll see…maybe this project of ours will help. To me, it’s sort of like a game show. We’re the lucky bachelor (or bachelorette), and it’s up to us to decide, through a series of dates and trysts—or assignments, rather—which contestant we’re most interested in. It should be fun.

My name is Emalyn, and I understand how you befuddled freshman feel. I am a college freshman who has been stressing about her career since the age of five. “Don’t worry, you have YEARS to figure that out,” people would reassure me. And yet, here I am, prime of my life, rearin’ to go, and I find it impossible to choose one of these multiple open career doors to walk through. Then again, odds are I’m the most indecisive person you will ever encounter. I can’t choose where to eat dinner, let alone what I’m planning to do for the (hopefully) eons of life I have left. So, although I may not be the most phenomenal of writers, I will attempt to tell you what's goin’ down in these different subjects that we five freshmen shall explore throughout the extent of our springtime.
